My friend John and I are climbing Tylorstown Tip – a summit also known as Old Smokey, named after the hot ash it was partly made with. We want to see how much of south Wales has burned.
The tip towers over the surrounding hills, a perfect crow’s nest from which to witness the blackening of the region. From the summit, with its sitka spruce and flowering heather, the expanse of St Gwynno’s forest spreads out before us, all 6,533 acres of it. Browned, dead plantation forestry gives way to grassland burned to cinder. A veil of smoke lies above the forest for miles.

Američki znanstvenici otkrili su da u predkliničkim modelima raka debelog crijeva tumori mogu početi oštećivati periferne živce prije početka kemoterapije. Ovi rezultati sugeriraju da upala povezana s tumorom i promjene u metabolizmu masti mogu oštetiti zaštitni omotač oko živaca, poremetivši signale i potencijalno ih čineći osjetljivijima na perifernu neuropatiju ili oštećenje živaca uzrokovano liječenjem.
Spoj koji se proizvodi u tijelu nakon jedenja nara poboljšava funkciju srca do 80% kod vrste zatajenja srca s ograničenim mogućnostima liječenja, pokazala je britanska studija. Naime, pokazalo se da urolitin A - prirodni spoj koji se proizvodi u tijelu nakon konzumiranja hrane poput nara, oraha i nekih bobičastih plodova - poboljšava sposobnost srca da se opusti, smanjuje ožiljke i sprječava štetno povećanje srca.
U nedavno objavljenom istraživanju pokazalo se da je prehrana bogata antioksidansima povezana s nižim rizikom od raka vrata maternice kod žena. Smatra se, da ovi rezultati sugeriraju da unos antioksidansa u prehrani može igrati potencijalnu ulogu u prevenciji raka vrata maternice.
Nova studija sugerira da se Alzheimerova bolest može otkriti snimanjem mozga više od sedam godina ranije nego što se prije pretpostavljalo. Naime, otkrivene su strukturne promjene u mozgu koje se događaju mnogo godina prije nego što se visoke razine amiloid-beta plaka vide na PET snimkama, što je snimanje mozga koje se trenutno koristi za identifikaciju najranijih znakova Alzheimerove bolesti.

Otprilike 65% odraslih osoba u SAD-u izvještava da svakodnevno konzumiraju jedno ili više napitaka zaslađenih šećerom. Znanstvenici Instituta za rak Mass General Brigham otkrili su da je svakodnevna konzumacija ovih napitaka povezana s povećanim rizikom od razvoja raka želuca.
