The Krilo Spreads Its Wings

Objavljeno u Zanimljivosti
As Mara of the excellent blog-website Go Hvar described recently, island hopping in Dalmatia can be "a bit of a challenge", to put it mildly, especially out of season.
It takes perseverance to overcome the obstacles, although it can be done. In Mara's case tenacity resulted in a memorable trip with husband Zdravko to Hvar's near-neighbour Korčula, recorded in a couple of equally memorable descriptions in words and pictures.

In the summer season, island-hopping becomes easier. This year the new high-speed boat service operated by U.T.O. Kapetan Luka linking Split with Milna (Brač), Hvar Town, Korčula and Dubrovnik has already proved a great success since starting on May 15th 2014. It is set to run until October 18th 2014, weather permitting of course. The boat on this route is the sleek-looking Krilo, which means wing in Croatian. The company name of Krilo derives from the place Krilo Jesenice, near Omiš south of Split, which is the home town of the Tomić family who own the company. Krilo Jesenice is famous for having the largest fleet of sailing boats on the Adriatic by long tradition.

The high-speed trip from Split to Dubrovnik takes something less than five hours. It is much quicker than the car ferry along the same route, so it is the best choice if you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible, and are not taking a car with you. The ferry trip, however, has certain advantages: you can be outdoors on the deck relaxing with a good book and a cool drink, and you can enjoy a reasonably good leisurely meal in the restaurant. And if you are taking a car, it saves you the drive down the coast. This avoids having to pass through the small stretch of land which belongs to Bosnia and Hercegovina. Although crossing these borders is rarely a problem, it is an area outside the EU, so the border authorities may perform checks on people and goods passing through.

On the high-speed boat, passengers have to have a seat inside the cabin. Once the boat is full to capacity there is no room for extra passengers. Tickets for the high-speed service can be purchased in Split on the pier in the middle of the port (Gat Sv. Petra, nearly opposite the entrance to the railway station), tel. 00 385 (0)21 645476; in Hvar Town from Pelegrini Tours on the pier, tel. 00 385 (0)21 742743; in Korčula from the kiosk on the western pier, tel. 00 385 (0)91 4770272; in Dubrovnik from the Elite Travel office (Tel 020 313 178), or in the Gruz passenger port office opposite the Hotel Palace. Tickets can also be booked online, but usually still have to be collected in person. We advise buying your ticket as early as possible to ensure you have a place on the boat. You are required to present a valid ID to travel on the ship.

U.T.O.Kapetan Luka operates a number of high-speed services between Split and the islands to the south of Split, as well as charter possibilities. The company now concentrates on high-speed vessels, but previously it boasted an extremely fine cruising yacht, the M/Y Kapetan Luka. Built in 1990, when Croatia was just emerging into independence from former Yugoslavia, it survived the ensuing Homeland War (1991 - 1995), and was put to good use as a cruise ship when peace was restored. I first came across it when my cousin Maja and her husband Joži sailed on it into Jelsa harbour with some friends in June 2007. The boat was exquisitely appointed inside and out, and the passengers couldn't praise it highly enough. As Joži is a yachting judge of many years' standing, his wholehearted recommendation carried great weight, and I could see it was well deserved. The 'Kapetan Luka' was later sold to Jerolim Nazor, also from Krilo Jesenice, like the Tomić family from whom he bought this splendid vessel. Jerolim Nazor has for many years run beautifully renovated wooden sailing boats for daytime tourist cruises and night-time fishing. His main vessel in recent times has been the 'Otac Duje', which is also the name of his company. Now known as the 'Kapetan Kuka' the 'Kapetan Luka' is available for private hire through Dream Journey Yachting.

  • Coming days are ‘absolutely critical’ for firefighters before temperatures rise again this week, officials say

Firefighters in France and Spain are racing to bring huge wildfires under control before another heatwave this week that will complicate efforts to tame the flames.

Spain’s interior minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, said Monday and Tuesday were “absolutely crucial days” before temperatures rise again from Wednesday, prompting prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, to warn: “We face difficult hours, complex hours” ahead.

  • Intensive nature of modern chicken farming creates ideal conditions for campylobacter, allowing bacteria to evolve

Industrial chicken farming is accelerating the spread of the world’s most common bacterial cause of diarrhoea, scientists have found.

The study found a dramatic increase in the exchange of campylobacter strains between wild birds and chickens as farming has intensified, creating the ideal conditions for the bacteria to mix, spread and acquire new traits. There has also been a rise in antimicrobial resistance traits in circulating strains, raising concerns that serious illness in people will be more difficult to treat.

  • North Yorkshire: It’s been a remarkable breeding season for these gorgeous creatures with ripped physiques and all-seeing eyes

“Just seen a gorgeous hare and thought of you. They’ve had an unbelievable breeding season.”

Like most farmers, my friend Richard is always busy and often exasperated. But he’s also refreshingly cognisant of his privilege and determined not to blow the opportunity to make a difference. Nature is always part of his management, and now and then I get a message sharing a wildlife update and take it as a cue to visit.

  • Experts who helped Burnham draw up Manchester carbon neutral pledge say backtracking would send wrong message amid wildfires and heatwaves

Leading climate scientists who created Greater Manchester’s carbon neutral by 2038 commitment are urging Andy Burnham to unequivocally reject new drilling in the North Sea.

In a letterto the prime minister they said he, as mayor of Greater Manchester, had unveiled one of the UK’s most ambitious local climate programmes that tackled housing, green growth and public transport.

  • From Afghanistan to Taiwan, unprecedented deluge highlights devastating impact of climate breakdown

“It rained for 10 days and 10 nights, non-stop – I’d never seen anything like it,” says Anar Gul, a construction worker who lives in the remote district of Dur Baba in eastern Afghanistan.

The houses in his village are built from stone and mud, which makes them extremely vulnerable to heavy rains. After days of rain, Gul’s kitchen collapsed and his neighbour, Sayed Afsar Sadat, saw a large part of his house completely destroyed. “Rains like this are coming heavier and earlier each year,” says Sadat. “They are destroying the roads and washing away our crops. It’s impacting us directly.”

  • As heatwaves make the capital increasingly dangerous, outreach workers warn that vulnerable people face barriers to finding water and cool spaces

“You’ve just got to bear it. It’s like being in a hot country. It drains you,” said Tom*, a man in his 60s who has been homeless for a number of years. “I haven’t seen weather like this for as long as I’ve been outside.

“I keep to my routines, but you need to find somewhere to sit down and rest. Either some cardboard outside or you find somewhere they’ll let you sit and sleep a bit inside,” he added.

  • Matthew Myerscough’s remarkable find is one of many detailed in his new book. But his journey into fossil hunting began years earlier, when he was caught in an avalanche

When Matthew Myerscough walks along a beach, he cannot help hunting for fossils. “I think my fossil radar is always on – even if I’m not looking, it’s hard sometimes to not see things,” says the 40-year-old civil engineer, who has discovered thousands of fossils on British beaches.

It was while he was “not looking” on Lavernock beach near Penarth, south Wales, that he recently stumbled across the fossilised bone of an early type of plesiosaur, a marine reptile that roamed the oceans while dinosaurs stalked the land during the early Jurassic period.

  • Hundreds of thousands of residents and holidaymakers in France and Spain have been forced to evacuate

Wildfires have forced about 375,000 people to leave their homes in France and Spain.

In France, nearly 260,000 have had to flee, while in neighbouring Spain 116,000 have been evacuated as the wildfires continue to wreak havoc across southern Europe.

  • With large areas still burning, damage from national park’s worst blaze could take decades, if not longer, to put right

It is the jewel in the crown of the Highlands, one of Scotland’s most impressive natural landscapes, but 12 days on from the start of an enormous wildfire that is tearing through moorland and forest, the Cairngorms national park is unrecognisable.

Hectares of blackened land were visible as low cloud cleared on Sunday, with smoke billowing into the air from large areas still ablaze. In the evening, the sky glowed an eerie orange.
